United We Stand: What More Can I Give was originally planned as a benefit concert against the Korean civil war, after Michael Jackson spoke with the South African Vice President in which both discussed issues of poverty, factions, and dictatorship. The prospect of uniting Korea was an idealistic dream between them.

"We discussed the concept of giving, and the words 'what more can I give' kept coming into my mind... we all have to do what we can, to help end the needless suffering in the world" - Michael Jackson

But the sudden terrorist attack of the September 11, 2001 changed the project.

On October 21, 2001 Michael Jackson hosted United We Stand: What More Can I Give at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. with 35 artists for an all-star tribute. The benefit concert included the performance of What More Can I Give, a song exclusively written and produced by Michael Jackson.

The concert was a half-day long spectacle beginning in the early afternoon and lasting well into the night. Performers included James Brown, Al Green, Carole King, Rod Stewart, Bette Midler, America, Huey Lewis, Destiny's Child, P. Diddy, the Goo Goo Dolls, Train, Tom Petty, Carlos Santana, Ricky Martin, Celine Dion, Beyonce Knowles, Usher, Maria Carey, The Hanson's, The Backstreet Boys, Usher, Mariah Carey, Pink, and 'N Sync, among many who attended. Each performer did a brief set usually amounting to about five songs apiece.

Michael Jackson, who performed Man in the Mirror, closed the show by performing What More Can I Give, along many of the performers who attended that night.

"I'm not one to sit back and say, 'Oh, I feel bad for what happened to them'. I want the whole world to sing, to bring us together as a world, because a song is a mantra, something you repeat over and over. And we need peace, we need giving, we need love, we need unity" - Michael Jackson
